LOCAL MUSICIANS TO THROW BENEFIT CONCERT FOR
SHORELINE SOUP KITCHENS & PANTRIES
By Woody Gantry

Seven years ago, a small group of area musicians were surprised by the large number of neighbors on the Connecticut shoreline who had to rely on the local Soup Kitchens for food. The musicians were moved to take action. They decided to try to help by doing what they do best - performing music. They put together a benefit concert featuring like-minded friends and performers. The idea was simple: They would donate their talent, take care of the cost of the venue and then be able to donate 100% of the proceeds directly to the Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries (SSK&P). It took some time to work out the details and over the years the concert has taken on several different forms, with a rotating cast of artists, sponsors and volunteers, and numerous venues. Brian Wolfe, who helped get the event up and running back in 2006, insists that this year’s show will be one of the best. “We have a stellar list of local and international artists”. Once again WYETH ARCHITECTS LLC of Chester and ACOUSTICMUSIC.ORG of Guilford will underwrite the fixed costs of the show, allowing 100% of the ticket and CD sales to go directly to the SSK&P.

The concert will take place on Friday, November 29th at 8pm at The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. Tickets start at $20.

The artists for this year’s show include Grammy nominated singer-songwriters AGNELLI & RAVE, The LICHTER BROTHERS; a Folk-Rock duo inspired by the sounds of the 1970’s California singer songwriter scene, EBIN-ROSE; owing much in mood to the timeless qualities found in the music of Nick Drake & Pentangle, MOVING TARGET; an eclectic, difficult to categorize jazz band, and The MEADOWS BROTHERS, a young Americana group putting their unique spin on traditional roots music.

The Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries provide food and fellowship to people in need in 11 towns, working through 8 meal sites and 5 food pantries. The SSK&P receives most of their funding from the generosity of people in the community. Current statistics indicate that over 11,000 families in the shoreline area are in need of help.

The Gowrie Group of Westbrook will match each and every dollar raised from ticket sales as part of their annual “Gowrie Challenge”: a yearlong fundraising event that brings local businesses together to support the Soup Kitchen. All money from merchandise sold by the artists will also go directly to the Soup Kitchen.

What better way to spend a Black Friday evening than to come on down to the Kate, kick back and enjoy some music while supporting a great cause that's 100% matched! Bring your friends, your family, your neighbor (that you’ve only spoken to a couple times), heck, bring your mailman!
