Animal tracks

I love when it snows a little as it did last Tuesday. Animals and birds leave all kinds of sign.  A walk in the woods, on the beach, suburban backyards or just about anywhere will give insight into a whole new world for those willing to look for it.
The purposeful walk of a coyote, like it has a plan where it's going and why, compared to a domestic dog, jumping and running all over the place.
The digging of squirrels or turkeys looking for those now elusive acorns or the track of a mink as it runs the edge of a stream, also looking for food.
Sometimes you'll find an otter slide on a snowy incline or marks from wing feathers of a wild turkey as it takes off from the ground.  It really is a story waiting to be read.
A Field Guide is about all you need to decipher the tracks you'll find. I have used Field Guide to Tracking Animals in Snow by Louise R. Forrest for years but there are other guides available. Above are some recent pictures of tracks I took in our area.
