The students of Morgan are well-known for making a difference in the school and the Clinton community. Some of the clubs that do so are Amnesty International, Interact, Art from the Heart and the Environmental Club. Two Morgan students, Emily and Monica Power, have recently created another club dedicated to making a difference in the world. Morgan’s Uganda Club is one of many started in the United States that aids the children of Uganda. This is a branch off of Call to Care Uganda, a nonprofit organization created in 2007 that is primarily located in Madison, Connecticut. Among many of their projects to help the poverty-stricken people of Uganda is the Water Project. As a result of many donations, wells were built to bring fresh water to more than 1,800 people. If you are not a high school student but still want to get involved in this cause, contact Martha Hoffman or visit calltocareuganda.org.  Remember, it takes a village.

Successful Math Team Match

March 10 was a very exciting day for the members of Morgan’s Math Team. This unique club at Morgan meets weekly in Mrs. Cooney’s room to complete packets of practice problems such as: 80% of an hour is equivalent to what percent of 5 minutes?  The answer is 960%. Math Team member Sally Levenduski says, “It’s fun, I like math. It’s just plain fun at the meets.” This particular meet happened to be the last one of the year and Morgan was victorious against its opponent, Westbrook.  It was a remarkable win because Morgan only had four players on their team against Westbrook’s five. Each team member completed three rounds of questions, each round consisting of three questions with a possible total of six points in each round. Senior captain Christian Haughwout scored two perfect rounds, while senior Krupa Patel and sophomore Cameron Engle each had one perfect round. Congrats! The Math Team’s banquet celebration will be held on March 21 where awards will be given to students with the highest combined scores of the season.

Mock Trial Ends

The industrious Mock Trial club had its last meeting on March 15. Mr. Graham, a history teacher at Morgan, created this club simply for those students who want to pursue a career in law or forensic science. In his own words, “I do this for the kids, so they can have the opportunity, and simply because I love to do it.”  This club spends their usual weekly meetings preparing a fake trial. Members of the club divide themselves onto either the side of defense or prosecution; this year’s case was about attempted murder. The Mock Trial Team also competes against other schools, but unfortunately they did not win their competition this year. It is obvious that all these dedicated students worked hard to prepare for their match and definitely gave it their all.

French Honors Society Induction The Foreign Language department at Morgan consists of Spanish, French and Chinese classes available to students of all grades and levels. On March 11, Katie Elliot, Lauren Gervais, Sarah Stearns and Tsering Lhamo were inducted into the French Honors Society. It’s a great accomplishment and commitment to be a part of this organization because members need to maintain a B average in an Honors French class and an A in a College Prep class. Those in the organization all had to fulfill five hours of community service as well. Good luck to all the French NHS members and their upcoming endeavors.
