School Calendar Remains "As Is" After Irene

Even after the loss of four days due to Tropical Storm Irene, the Superintendent of Schools says the calendar will remain as it stands.

During the recent Board of Education meeting, Superintendent of Schools Jack Cross addressed the school calendar issue, noting that even though the district was forced to delay the opening of the school year, that the calendar shall remain "as is" for now.

The school year was scheduled to begin Tuesday, August 30 this year, but due to the heavy damage and loss of power from Tropical Storm Irene, the first day of school did not take place until Tuesday, September 6, one day after the Labor Day holiday.

In a statement, Cross said that given the events around Tropical Storm Irene and the delayed start of school, there are some questions about the 2011-2012 school calendar.

"The approved 2011-2012 school calendar remains intact," he said.

The original calendar had eight emergency closing days built in and to date we have used four of those days, leaving us four additional emergency closing days, noted Cross.

If we need to use more than four emergency closing days due to weather or other emergencies, the Board of Education reserves the right to adapt the calendar, stated Cross.

The last day of school for the 2011-2012 school year is scheduled for Friday, June 22, 2012.
