Morgan Students Kick-Off Husky Helper Day

It's that time of year when students hit the streets of Clinton and clean, weed, sweep and wash away the winter, making the town spiffy and looking like new.

Yesterday, the entire Morgan School came together to kick-off the start of their third annual Husky Helper Day - this year scheduled for Friday, May 17.

What is a Husky Helper Day?

It’s when high school students spend the day immersed in the community, meeting heads of non-profits, churches, societies and town hall.  In groups, students lend a hand where help is needed.

For example, they rake leaves and weed the gardens at the Clinton Historical Society on East Main Street; they wash the vehicles at the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department; they sweep the giant back parking lot at Andrews Memorial Town Hall, and a lot more.  Tasks involve both inside and outside work.

Morgan School Principal Keri Hagness said more than 35 representatives from town organizations and non-profits such as Forgotten Felines and Boxes for Soldiers have signed up to have a group of students come to their location and help out. Each year, this number grows, said Hagness.

"The day isn’t about you," said Hagness to the entire student body on April 2. "It’s about the community and giving back. Husky Helper Day shifts the perception to show what kids are capable of doing.”

New this year is the ability of students to photograph, tweet and text their progress as they are out in the fields.  The real-time information will be gathered to check progress and timing and ultimately to be celebrated at the closing ceremony held after a hard day's work.
