Update at 7:30pm:

It turned out to be synthetic snow, said Sgt. Jeremiah Dunn of the Clinton Police Department.

That white substance, considered hazardous when first discovered by kids on their school bus, turned out to be synthetic snow by the state's DEP Hazmat personnel.

Parent Joe Cifferelli was at the Abraham Pierson School in Clinton earlier patiently waiting for his daughter, Abbey, 13, to be released from a state DEP Hazmat decontamination situation at the school.

At 3pm today, according to Dunn, a school bus coming from the Eliot School arrived at the Pierson School where it was discovered that there was a powdery white substance found in a plastic bag. About 18 kids were on the bus.

"My daughter texted my wife who is a teacher at the Joel School," said Cifferelli. "She's nervous, but with all the stuff going on at the post offices a while back, I'm nervous too."

The police, fire department and state DEP Hazmat Department all descended upon the Abraham Pierson School (grades 4 and 5) in Clinton over the potential and alleged hazardous material.

The 21 students underwent decontamination procedures according to regulations, said Dunn.  At 6pm, all students who were on that particular bus were still in the school and are undergoing the procedure by the state DEP.

Superintendent of School Jack Cross called it right when he said "it could be nothing but we have to take this seriously."

Responding to the scene are units from Madison and Guilford as well as the state.
