CAPT Scores Up & Down

Overall Direction Is "Favorable" Says Superintendent Of Schools

Although Clinton's test scores on the recently released Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) are both up and down, Superintendent of Schools Jack Cross says that in the big picture, "the general trend is in an upward direction."

The test, which involves four subjects of math, science, reading and writing, is given to tenth grade students each year.

This year, 130 Clinton 10th graders took the test.

Cross explained the numbers by saying that a three to five percent change up or down in the numbers can be attributed to the performance of just a couple of students since such a small number (130) take the test.

In math, the number were up from last year's 88.8 score to 90 in those "at or above proficiency" but down in those "at or above goal" from 61.2 in 2010 to 53.8 this year.

In science, both numbers were down from last year. In "at or above proficiency" the number went from 91.5 to 88.1.  In "at or above goal" the score dropped from 55.6 to 52.2.

In reading, the numbers were up and down: up for those "at or above goal" from 53.8 to 57, but down for those "at or above proficiency" from 88.9 in 2010 to 88.3 this year.

Again in writing, the scores were both up and down. They increased from 91.6 in "at or above proficiency" to 94.7, but decreased from 2010's 76.5 score to 74.2 in "at or above goal."

Cross and Assistant Superintendent of Schools Maryann O'Donnell will take these numbers and review them in relation to their long-term curriculum plans and other district goals.

"We will look at instruction practices, curriculum, resources, and our focus, which is engaging kids in the application of subjects such as math," said Cross.

O'Donnell said they will take the results and break them down, to look closely at what programs may contribute to the success as well as the decline of the scores.

"The general trend is in an upward direction, a positive direction, slowly but surely," said Cross.
