Now, the question is, who can vote on a referendum? Registered voters only, right? Wrong.
Here's who can vote when the town goes to referendum on the budget, bonding, or any other referendum:
1. a registered voter in the town of Clinton
2. any individual who owns property (real estate as well as motor vehicles) whose property on the current grand list is assessed at $1,000 or more. This individual can reside outside of the town. The property cannot be in trust or LLC as it is the individual who can vote, not the trust/LLC. This person must be 18 years of age or older and is called an "elector." They must come in person to town hall to vote on the day of the referendum or fill out an absentee ballot, in person, at the town clerk's office during regular business hours (9am-4pm Mon., Tues., Wed; 9am-7pm Thurs; 9am-noon Fri.) Absentee ballots have been available beginning May 5.
Who can vote in an election or primary:
1. must be a registered voter and reside in town. For primaries, you must be registered at the time of the vote for the party who is holding the primary.
Just as a reminder, you can never vote for someone else, even if that person is a relative, incapacitated or handicapped, and/or if you have Power of Attorney over them. There are no proxy (someone substituting for you even with your permission) votes.
Another note: the entrance to the Green Room at Clinton Town Hall (from the back parking lot) is undergoing renovations (see photo). Please use caution stepping around the scaffolding.
