Voters Turn Out Steadily

More Residents Voting Than In Last Municipal Election

By 4 p.m., about 28 percent or 2,516 of the town’s 9,028 voters had cast their ballots, said Wendy McDermott the Republican registrar of voters.

“Compared to two years ago during the last municipal election, we are about 500 votes ahead per hour of where we were then,” McDermott said, indicating greater participation in the political process.

Many people arrived with children in tow, pointing out the names on the ballot and showing the kids how to cast a vote.

Voters named a number of reasons for turning out today including wanting to keep an eye on the school board, hoping for change, looking to town government to increase the tax base and more.

Resident Sally Cotter arrived with her 21-year-old daughter, Ashley, to support Democrat William “Willie” Fritz Jr. for First Selectman.

“I’m very much a supporter of Willie,” Sally Cotter said. “I had been trying to start a teen center for years and he was the person who found us a building. He lets people try things. He’s very much a positive force.

Ashley Cotter said that she was exercising her right to vote to be sure that people who are elected will do what’s right for the town.

If you haven’t voted, there’s still time. Polls stay open until 8 p.m.
