Voters Reject Both Budgets

On a rainy and foggy day, voters headed to Clinton Town Hall and voted down two budgets, the only two questions on the referendum.

On May 8, voters rejected both the proposed town and school budgets for fiscal year '13-'14 which begins July 1, 2013.

Here's how people voted:

$15.39 million town budget:
1,137 yes votes
1,510 no votes
(a difference of 373 votes)

$31.40 million school budget
1,122 yes votes
1,212 no votes
(a difference of 90 votes)

Immediately following the reading of the results, the town's Board of Finance assembled for a meeting. After discussion, they voted to reduce the town budget by $175,000 and reduce the school budget by $49,000.

Vocal opponent of the budget Vince Cimino said the budget was too high, it needs to be reduced so there will be no tax increase, and the town should appropriate surplus funds from the Board of Education budget to the proposed budget.

According to the Registrar of Voters, 2,567 voters cast their votes out of 9,207 registered voters in the May 8 referendum.  The combined budget represented a spending increase of 1.28 percent over current spending.

A second referendum vote is proposed two weeks from this vote, or May 22.
