New Proposal Could Bring More Casinos to Connecticut

An Interior Department proposal could give federal tribal recognition to Connecticut Indian groups that were previously denied.

Will Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun soon face some Connecticut competition?

A new proposal from the Interior Department will allow previously denied Indian groups to reapply for federal recognition, a move that possibly opens the door for new casino developments, the Hartford Courant reports.

Local tribes such as the Eastern Pequots, near Stonington, and the Schaghticokes, near Kent, are two examples of groups that could now be eligible for federal tribal status, although they were previously denied that recognition in 2005, the Courant reports.

Several of the tribal recognition requirements have also been changed under the proposal, potentially making it easier for some groups to gain federal tribal status, the Courant added.

Residents have until August 16 to publicly comment on the proposal, according to the Courant.
