Malloy Wants Federal Action on Gun Controls in Wake of Newtown Shootings

Speaking at a press conference Monday the governor also said he had to break the news Friday to some grieving Newtown parents that their children were dead.

As families of some of the 26 people killed in the Newtown shooting rampage begin burying their loved ones, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said the federal government needs to get serious about enacting stricter gun laws.

Speaking at a press conference in Hartford on Monday, Malloy also said that while he was in the Sandy Hook Firehouse last week with some of the parents of the 20 children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, he realized that some of them had waited hours for word of their loved ones and did not know that their children were gone. He took on the grim task of ending their uncertainty, he said.

“I made the decision that … to have that go on any longer was wrong,” Malloy said, as he fought back tears.

He also told reporters that he wants federal lawmakers to get serious on gun control legislation.

“Do I think Washington D.C. needs to get its act together and enact stricter gun control laws at the federal level? You bet I do.”

Malloy has called for a moment of silence this Friday and for churches to toll their bells 26 times in honor of the shooting victims.

DisgruntledinClinton- Governor Malloy, like every other rational citizen, is talking about banning combat style assault weapons, not hunting rifles or hand guns. If guns like the Bushmaster are legal in CT then our gun laws are clearly not strict enough. When I saw a picture of that thing I was shocked and horrified that that is legal. I'm very interested to hear what the NRA will say at their news conference on friday. I urge you to watch Joe Scarborough's video on his Morning Joe website. He is a conservative republician who has changed his position on gun control in the wake of this tragedy. And Dannel means "God is my Judge." (which is perhaps why he is working hard to help get these killing machines out of the hands of civilians)

First off, you are a frightened human being. Your irrational fear, bred in part from the mass media and the other from the NRA and its spokespeople you listen to, is controlling you. This fear is driving you into that maniacal world of delusion where bad guys lurk around the corner and black helicopters spy on your whereabouts. Defense is not in owning guns, it is in banning them and making them illegal. It is in heavy background checks and establishing lifetime ammo purchase limits (Israel lets its citizens have 50 bullets to use over a person's lifetime, for example). Your guns will protect you until you fall asleep and someone steals them, or someone conks you on the head and takes them or..answer me this, if you are a responsible gun owner, that is keeping ammo and weapon locked in different gunsafes - how is a gun going to help you in an break in anyway? Get a dog and a baseball bat, surrender your guns and let go of the fear.
