Lottery Held For November Ballot Placement

Top Spot Or Number Two Or Three? It's All In The Luck Of The Draw.

Does being number one or number two make a difference at the polls? Only the candidates and the results of the upcoming November municipal election can tell.

In the town clerk's office preciously at noon on August 24, a lottery was held to determine the placement of candidate names on the printed ballot.

Town Clerk Karen Marsden explained that since the current governor of the state of Connecticut is a Democrat, the top line of candidates on the ballot will be the Democrats.

The lottery comes into play when there are more than one candidate from the same party running for office. For example, if there are three Republican candidates for the Board of Education, in what order shall their names appear on the ballot? The lottery determines the order.

Marsden placed the applicable (not all races required a lottery) names in a silver bowl. Registrars of Voters Wendy McDermott (R) and June Hansen (D), without seeing the contents, picked the candidates of the opposite party.
