Governor Malloy Visits Clinton [With Video]

He arrives with $400,000 in grant money for improvements to Clinton's streetscape

Just four days before Christmas, Governor Dannel Malloy arrived at in a car (not sleigh) and blue suit (not red) and handed out a $400,000 check (not toys) for the town of Clinton.

I don't think anyone missed the toys.

The $400,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant will be used in the town's downtown streetscape revitalization efforts.

Drawings were made available that showed improvements to the viewing area of Indian River adjacent to town hall and to the area in front of the train station at the corner of West Main.

“The new streetscape envisioned for downtown Clinton is a key ingredient in the town’s economic revitalization efforts already underway, and this $400,000 state grant is essential for that new streetscape to go forward,” Senator Eileen M. Daily (D-Westbrook) said in a statement. “Clinton has become well-known for its retail corridor right along I-95; I expect this investment will boost the profile of the original business district along Route 1 as well.”

State Representative James Crawford (D-Westbrook) who attended the town hall event, said this in a statement.

"This grant is a further endorsement by the state of the vision the Clinton Board of Selectmen has set forth for this community", said Rep. Jim Crawford.  "Each new project further enhances the quality of life for all the residents. The steady pace of improvements is a positive reflection of the vitality that energizes Clinton."

First Selectman Willie Fritz thanked many, including the governor for supporting the project and the town.

"I'd like to thank State Representative Jim Crawford who is here, State Senator Eileen Daily who could not be here, my mother (state representative Mary Fritz (D-Wallingford)) and Dan who has been very supportive. We just received a $680,000 Small Cities award for improvements to the Glenhaven Elderly Housing," said Fritz.
