24 Hours Left (and counting) to File for Elderly Tax Relief

Clinton's deadline to file for the elderly tax relief program is fast approaching. Applicants can file up to 4 PM Wednesday, May 15. Those interested can fill their information out online, but the Assessors Office encourages those applying to head down to the town hall and apply in person. 

Here are some details about the program and the information you will need if you want to apply. The following information was provided by The Office of the Assessor:

Clinton residents may apply for the Elderly/Disabled Homeowners, Tax Relief, Tax Deferral and/or Veterans programs.  Applicants must be over 65 as of December 31, 2012 OR be permanently and totally disabled, regardless of age. Applications will be accepted February 1, 2013 through May 15, 2013.  

Please be sure to bring all forms of income, including Social Security Statement #SSA-1099, and your Federal Tax Return, if you are required to file.   For the State of Connecticut’s Elderly and Totally Disabled Tax Relief program, maximum income levels are $33,500 for a single person and $40,900 for a married couple.  The Veterans program also provides additional tax relief of $18,000 to $21,000 if qualified as a Disabled Veteran.   

The Town of Clinton’s Elderly/Disabled programs allows for an Adjusted Gross Income plus Social Security not to exceed $55,000. 

Additional qualifications for property tax relief are that an applicant or his/her spouse must own the property for which tax relief is sought and has been a homeowner of the Town of Clinton as of the date of application for a period of not less than one (1) year, and does not owe any delinquent taxes to the Town other than those allowed by law under the Town’s Tax Deferral Program.
