By Cassandra Day:

A little over a year has passed since the tragic hit-and-run accident that took the life of Clinton teen Cailyn Bassett as she walked along Saybrook Road in Middletown.

And although Middletown Police had secured video footage and a"vehicle of interest," they still await the autopsy report from Connecticut's chief medical examiner's office, according to theMiddletown Press, and hope to receive them by the end of February.

Bassett, 15, and a 10th-grader at the Morgan School in Clinton, was struck and killed in Middletown on Dec. 7, 2012, at 5:45 p.m., police said, near the intersection of Coe Avenue Extension.

Officers were led to the vehicle after obtaining video surveillance from the area, allowing them to “identify the vehicle that it would probably be,” Middletown Police Lt. Heather Desmond said.

Bassett attended the Middletown High School vocational agricultural program for a short while, was a talented writer and artist, loved reading and hoped someday to become a veterinarian and writer.

With the passage of Middletown's $15.2 million road improvement referendum, the city's public works department is building sidewalks, including one on Saybrook Road near Stop & Shop. Within the past year, she said, there have been a couple accidents — including one fatal — involving pedestrians there.

It is a shame that you (the driver), can face ur day every day without clearing your conscious and helping this family have closure for thei beloved child. Can't you do this one thing? Do something right for a change, don't be a coward. Face ur fears and help this family, who, by the way, I don't even know, but it saddened me so much I had to write this!!

Linda, I thank you for being such a compassionate human being in posting this comment. I do know the family of this young woman and knew Caitlyn since she was born. I to wish that the person out there that was involved in this accident would do the right thing and come forward so that this weight could be lifted from everyone involved. Please.
