I think it is very unfortunate that news outlets choose to post the police blotter. While it is a common occurrence, and certainly within the scope of the FOIA, it is a CHOICE that news outlets make. I have always despised the practice and find it very slimy that it is done. It serves no purpose, other than to provide fodder for gossipy discussions. And, no one ever comes back and posts that someone listed was wrongly accused, acquitted, or found innocent of the charges. So, in the end, readers have only the bad side of the picture to remember. What purpose does this practice serve, but to smear names and embarrass the people who live in our lovely town. At the VERY LEAST, you could refrain from publishing names. Just a note on police blotters: the information is available to the public, it is not obtained through FOI. Patch clearly states that the information is supplied by the police and does not indicate a conviction. If documentation is forwarded to us that states that the charges were dropped, etc., we note such on the article.
