Police: Clinton Man Arrested for Sexually Assaulting Child

The 67-year-old man also had previous convictions in the 1970's and 80's for the "same type activity" — but was not on the sex offender registry because the previous assaults were prior to the registry statute, police said.

A Clinton man was taken into custody early Monday morning after a four-month investigation found he had sexually assaulted a local child at his home, police said.

William Motta Sr, of Glenwood Road in Clinton, was arrested March 10 and charged with first-degree sexual assault, second-degree unlawful restraint and risk of injury to a minor.

Four-Month Investigation

According to Clinton Police Chief Todd J. Lawrie, Motta was arrested by warrant after a four-month investigation into allegations he sexually assaulted a child.

Lawrie reports that Motta had previous convictions "in the 1970's and 80's for the same type activity."

"The child was an acquaintance of Motta and the assault occurred at Motta's residence," Lawrie stated in a press release.

He added that parents of the child were not aware of Motta's previous convictions.

"Motta is not on the sex offender registry because the previous assault(s) were prior to sex offender registry statute," Lawrie stated.

Held On Bond

Following his arrest Monday morning, Motta was transported to the Clinton Police Department where he was processed and held on a $500,000 court set bond.

He was scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior court the same day.
