Spreading Holiday Cheer

On Friday, members of Morgan REACT and their friends met to spread "a little mug of good holiday cheer" to kids who need a little extra to smile about this year.

On Friday, members of Morgan REACT and their friends met to spread some holiday cheer to kids who need a little extra to smile about this year. Jess Accetta, a sophomore at Morgan, knew that patients of Dr. Joseph McNamara needed their spirits lifted and decided to do something about it. In her words:

"REACT is a high school group that does various events around the town of Clinton and supports the connection of youth and adults, all the while aiding in keeping high school students off drugs and making smart choices. In light of this holiday season and all the joy it brings we decided to come together and do something that would expand to other communities and help who ever we can. What we intend to do is spread a little mug of good holiday cheer.

Dr. Joesph McNamara runs a pediatric clinic for young children and teens who are diagnosed with cancer in Guilford. These kids are there several times a week and for several hours a day. In the end, despite the efforts of the good doctor and his staff, the patients are tired and sore. This year, it would be nice to do something for them. Coming together we would like to donate mugs with hot cocoa mix and  chapsticks. The patients are often cold and in pain from the chemotherapy and the gifts given would certainly provide comfort this holiday season.

Contributing to this office will not solely affect the patients but will have a positive influence on us as well. Through doing this, those of us in the REACT club will begin to build new developmental assets. Those assets are:

  • Caring - a young person places high value on helping other people.
  • Equality and Social Justice - a young person places high value on promoting equality and reducing hunger and poverty.
  • Interpersonal Competence - a young person has empathy, sensitivity, and friendship skills.

The members of REACT will be able to use these assets as the building blocks of our lifestyle and they will aide us in our growing and continuing to be caring, competent, and responsible. With the combination of giving back to our community and gaining assets, REACT benefits immensely and shines brightly on the work we have done and intend to do in the following new year."
