Patch’s Poll: Should Illegal Immigrants Who Came Here as Children Face Deportation?

The Obama administration said it will stop deporting some illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. before they were 16 years old. What are your thoughts on this?

President Barack Obama announced last week that his administration will stop deporting illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children and who pose no security threat.

According to CNN, under the new policy, people younger than 30 who came to the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military can get a two-year deferral from deportation.

These youths will also have to prove they have been in the country for at least five years, the news network said.

Obama said his executive order would make immigration policy “more fair, more efficient and more just,” according to CNN.

"This is not amnesty. This is not immunity. This is not a path to citizenship. It's not a permanent fix," the president said.

The issue has sparked debate among news organizations, political pundits and ordinary citizens, as to whether this is a good move now.

On a local level, Connecticut saw a similar situation like this back in 2004, when a Norwich Free Academy graduate, Majan Jean, was facing deportation because she came to the U.S. illegally when she was 12, according to the Hartford Courant. She avoided being sent to her native Haiti because of legislation that was pending at the time in Congress.

We want to know what you think.

Do you think illegal immigrants, brought here as children and are now under the age of 30, should face deportation? Regardless of their social standing in society? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

Nerissa~ The people posting comments should read what you posted and learn from you. I have so much respect for people that have come here legally, like my own grandparents did, it's a process, but it can be done.

Jay, if you're looking for example on "how its better to be here illegally", there's the obvious: illegals get to use all of our public systems/services for free while WE pay all the State and Federal taxes which go to support those systems. If you were given the option to pay zero federal and state income taxes, wouldn't that be great? I don't know about you, but after all State, Fed, social security, etc is taken out of my checks, it seems like about half of it is gone. If that was the only benefit to being here illegally(which it's not), I'd say keeping an extra 50% of the money earned is pretty sweet. Again, I'm totally FOR true immigration reform, but we need to finish building a real wall first as to keep out the really bad/violent folks first. I saw an awful statistic a few months ago... something about how there are more Americans killed by illegal alien drunk drivers here in the States on a monthly basis than there are American troops who die in combat today world-wide. Why don't we ever hear about these stories on the news? Its because the liberal news media doesn't want you to know about how often it happens. My 2 Cents, Cheers, Joe

If anyone wants to know what "real immigration reform" will look like once its finally here, take a look at the "ITIN" program that certain states offer for illegals to get a home mortgage. I've been in the mortgage industry for 12 years and I can tell you first hand how these deals work, and most notably the program's shortcomings. The gist of this program, similar to that which many politicians are proposing as a compromise to illegals, grants the immigrant leeway in not having a SS# as long as they pay the last few years federal income taxes. For example, here in IL, an illegal can obtain a 30yr fixed mortgage as long as they file (and prove they pay) their last 3 years income taxes. Sounds reasonable, right? The facts: every ITIN deal I've ever done for these clients over the last 12 years has never made it to the closing table, yes 100% fall-out for me personally. Want to know why? Once they discover how much they owe in back taxes for those 3 years, they back out. I believe this existing program sheds a very bright light on how things would look if illegals were ever given the chance to stay here legally if they were willing to so much as pay the back taxes they technically owe. It's sad to say, but assuming a similar outcome will happen with a nation-wide "compromise", there will still be millions of illegals who prefer to stay in hiding rather than to start making monthly payments to bring their past income taxes current in exchange for amnesty of sorts.

Oh people, it is so much more fun to forget this poll and stick to cute dogs and who makes grinders you like. The word "illegal" is simply too difficult to define (mostly). Rather lets have a poll on which way hot dogs buns should be sliced or the merits of clear clam chowder vs. with milk. That's the best route to take to avoid conflict and turmoil. Be adaptive!!!

Mr. or Mrs. Live for freedom! All about Hispanics? Sound like a racial bug in your blood line. All imigrants are effected ie. European / Asian / African, South American, Austrailian even Canadians alike. You spend too much time thinking about Mexicans. This would've meant you as well provided the time line. None of us are True Americans if you trace blood. If your grandfathers were deported by people who have your train of thought, you wouldn't be in the Western world to begin with. Think about what you say before you say (or type it.
