Speak Out: 'Clinton's Garbage Problem'

I recently moved to Clinton and am truly disheartened to see so many litter-strewn properties with buildings in such extreme states of neglect and disrepair.

Old cars that are deteriorating in yards and probably contaminating our ground water are apparently allowed to continue to rot without issue unless someone submits a blight report.

Why is it that if someone would like to submit a blight report on a property that the property owner must be made aware of who is submitting the complaint?

I have a neighbor that just threw a mattress behind a huge rock so they don't have to see it but all the neighbors are now having to look at a disgusting rotting mattress.

I don't want to anger my neighbor but I also don't want to live in a dump.

I believe if reporting blight was allowed to be anonymous we would see an increase in reports and perhaps, hopefully, a better looking community which in turn would increase our property values.

In my former town we were able to remain anonymous and hence, had a beautiful town we were proud to live in.

JANE, There is no more pride left in this town. I can remember years ago, when we had a slogan in town, and that slogan was, "CLINTON IS FITTEN", well, that's been long gone for quite some time now, because Clinton isn't fittin anymore. That's why everyone is moving out. we older people were taught the value of things and we appreciated and took care of what we had, and we still take pride in what we have. Not like the young people today, everything to them is disposeable, if it breaks, don't bother to fix it, just throw it out and buy a new one. There doesn't seem to be any pride out there anymore.

Yes there is Joan.plenty of pride. did you miss the 350 celebration? Dozens of people worked hundreds of hours for free! Pretty committee people work hundreds of hours for free! WHY?? Because we have pride. The Arbour Garden group puts out those flower buckets in the center of town each summer and waters them every week. Many other groups, work very hard to make the town look better so don't you DARN say there is no pride here P.s. I was born and raised here. And I am 66 years old

This is what I was talking about, taking pride in what we have. Yes, these committees, do a nice job, but this is only a certain few, and many of the people I've seen out there filling the buckets with plants or cleaning up around the bank, are older people, who DO take pride in what they do. I was sitting in my car one day, waiting for the light to turn, when I noticed a young mother on the side with her child. The child was wacking the plants and the mother did nothing. Then another time, In the parking lot behind the stores in town, I noticed a woman, throwing a dirty diaper out under her car. When I told her that she should pick it up and throw it in one of the garbage bins. I was told by her to go F--- myself. Sure, you work hard to try and make things look better in town, but the rest of the town needs a lot of help too. If we could only get people to stop throwing their junk out of car windows, That alone would be a big help.

Joan, next time you see someone throwing something out their window, take down their license plate number and a description of the car and go to the police. We have an awesome police department that are in place to enforce our laws.

So what can we all do? We have to get to the little ones...some parents are not teaching their kids not to litter or respect other people's property. The person...can't get myself to call her a lady... With the dirty diaper is just a pig period. I wish we could all come up with a way...should the schools teach more of....how are WE going to save this planet of ours. Earth day is April 22...should we make a BIG DEAL out of it...Donna is right.. Last year as we celebrated 350 years. Pride was there....come on Clintonians.... We have a few problems but this really is a town with great people....let us unite and fix it!!!!
