Fireworks Can Be Stressful to Your Dog

Not everyone in your household will enjoy the fireworks on 4th of July weekend!

Ah summer officially begins with schools closed and fourth of July around the corner.  We look forward to the upcoming weekend of patriotic celebrations but it's worth noting that many dogs find the booms and pops of firework displays alarming.

If you're going to leave to watch local fireworks keep in mind that your dog may be at home shaking in fear, a few precautions to consider:

(1) Don't leave. Many a dog owner will stay home to comfort their dog during fireworks season. We have two of three that require that commitment in my household.

(2) Crate you dog. Sometimes the security of the crate will ease anxiety from loud noises or strange lights.

(3) Keep music or the TV on for ambient noise. It may lessen the impact of the booms and pops.

(4) Give your dog a treat. A Kong filled with peanut butter will keep your dog busy until you return for the evening.

Any change in household routine will create 'concern' in your dog so be aware that the sounds of fireworks may be traumatic.
