Foodie In Florence: The Slow Food Movement

Learn what the Slow Food movement is, and how we have our own Shoreline branch!

One of the most well known movements, the Slow Food movement started in Italy and is now all over the United States! Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization who are linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment.

Slow Food was founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.

Slow food helps defend food traditions, network small scale farmers and producers with academics and the youth to collaboratively work towards a change in the food system, teach food and taste education, and help bridge the gap between consumers and producers.

Here on the shoreline we are so lucky that we can become involved in the shoreline branch of Slow Foods. You can follow their events on the Slow Food Shoreline Facebook page, or become a member to really get involved. They post lots of events and information that you can support! The big theme with slow food is to become a responsible consumer. Slow Food encourages everyone to slow down and use their senses to enjoy quality food with awareness, learning to choose good food that is produced in harmony with the environment and local cultures.

Once I'm back in the States, I too will be looking to get involved in this branch. I've been a member at two different colleges, but with graduating approaching I'll be ready to follow Slow Food along the shore!

Have a slow day Patch readers and Buon Appetito!
