Foodie In Florence: Good For the Money

Every thought of banking as sustainable? Learn how it can be an ethical way to support the green revolution.

During my first week of food study my classmates and I got to meet with a group of people in Florence who are working to make the city more sustainable and not in regards to food.

One of our meetings took us to a bank called BancaEtica. This bank follows ethical practices who believe that having access to finance in all its forms is a human right. BancaEtica states that their ethically oriented finance is aware of the non economic consequences of economic actions. What this means is that they won't support companies or organisations that don't reflect the social and environmental impact of their activities. The savings raised from citizens, organisations, companies, and institutions are managed by BancaEtica and then invests in initiatives that pursue both social, environmental, and economic objectives.

With the economic crashing and burning going on, wouldn't it be nice to know that you're money isn't going towards unsustainable practices or companies who don't follow labor laws or safe working conditions? This is exactly what BancaEtica provides.

Next time you're making your deposits ask about your banks ethical banking practices or if they have an ethical banking branch. Ethical banking is good for the money and good for sustainability!
