The Bike & Pedestrian Alliance of Clinton (BPAC) Meeting

The Bike & Pedestrian Alliance of Clinton (BPAC) is on the agenda for the December 12th Police Commission meeting in the Police Station Community Room, beginning at 6 pm.

Our purpose is to request that the Commission (Clinton's legal traffic authority) grant us permission to submit to them a plan for narrowing lane widths on Route 1 through town and on parts of Route 81 from the Indian River Complex on into town when the CT (Department of Transportation) DOT begins restriping the state highways next spring.

Any state road which requires resurfacing may qualify for lane narrowing if certain safety criteria are met. Data from other lane narrowing projects show that making lanes 'skinnier' is an effective traffic calming measure, a result which many residents support in order to slow traffic down to posted speed limits through town and make roads safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

An added benefit, of course, is that decreasing the width of the travel lane increases the width of the shoulder,  providing a larger buffer for bicyclists on the side of the road.

We invite all interested residents to attend the meeting on the 12th and offer their comments concerning this initiative.

We also invite anyone interested in helping to make Clinton a more bike- and pedestrian-friendly community to join us at the next BPAC meeting on Tuesday evening, Dec. 20, 7:30 pm, at the Eliot House next door to Town Hall.
