Feds Give State $1M for Cleanup, Repair of Roads

Cleanup of roads and transportation infrastructure expected to cost up to $5 million statewide.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration is giving the state Department of Transportation immediate access to $1 million in emergency relief funding to help with cleanup and infrastructure repairs in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

In a preliminary estimate, the state DOT said cleanup and repair costs will top $5 million statewide, including more than $1 million to clean up local roads. There were no catastrophic failures of state roadways or bridges.

"Now that the storm has passed, we’re focused on undoing what has been done to our homes, properties, and infrastructure,” Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Friday in a press release. “This funding source, which our federal partners have made immediately available, will allow our DOT to pay for ongoing cleanup and to continue to make repairs as quickly as possible to damaged portions of our roads and bridges. We need to keep people and goods moving, and this will allow the DOT to do just that."
