Save the Sound Releases Fall 2013 Data

Pollution in the sound is an ongoing problem that we face on the shoreline.  Save the Sound is an organization formed to unite volunteers to participate in cleanup activities to improve the Long Island Sound.  Just recently, Save the Sound, in coordination with the 2013 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), released coastal cleanup data in Connecticut for last fall.

Save the Sound has been affiliated with ICC cleanups for 12 years now. This past year in Connecticut, volunteers filled close to 450 bags of garbage and covered about 70 miles.  This amounted to almost 9,000 lbs of trash on our shoreline that was collected by volunteers.

Volunteer groups are comprised of schools, clubs, scouts, or any environmentally conscious individuals.  Presently, the ICC has reached over 650,000 volunteers globally in 92 countries.  These volunteers have covered over 12,000 miles of shoreline and are constantly improving the safety of beaches for humans and wildlife inhabitants.  It is important to be aware of the damaging effects of pollution on the sound, and ways you can help combat this persistent problem.
