Local Small Business Sends Out Alerts; Offers Reward to Help Stop East Coast Bicycle Theft Organization

A rash of robberies targeting high end bicycles and specialty stores have been taking place since the beginning of the year, progressing up the East Coast, as far away as Virginia.

Zane’s Cycles in Fairfield, CT was recently robbed of a 2013 Trek Domane 5.9. Christopher Zane, President of Zane’s Cycles is offering a $2000 reward to the person that helps catch these thieves.

“While we make every effort to be alert and safeguard against theft in our stores, we were clearly the victim of calculated robbery by professionals,” said Zane. “We want to make other bike shops and specialty stores aware of the heightened risk. “   Zane’s Cycles flagship store is located in Branford, CT.

In each case, three individuals are involved, two male and one female. They are mid-to-late 20’s. The female is under  5’ tall, medium build. The males are both approximately 5’9” tall, both with medium build, short hair and no facial hair.

The scenario begins with a lone male entering the store. He will tell the employee he is just looking and makes himself inconspicuous. The 2nd male and the female enter the store as a couple with a friendly demeanor, asking questions about bikes, engaging the employees in conversation, distracting them by asking to retrieve bikes from top racks, etc. The 1st male will target an expensive bike near the store exit. While the employees are busy with the couple, the lone male exits the store with a bike.

These individuals know exactly which merchandise to take – Trek and Bianchi bikes appear to be the top choice, valued at over $5500.
