From Metro-North:

Rail Fare Increase Takes Effect January 1, 2014

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) reminds passengers that the third of three fare increases will go into effect on January 1, 2014. Monthly tickets on sale for January will reflect the new fares. The new fares will be implemented on the New Haven Line and Shore Line East.

“This fare increase is the third in nine years,” said DOT Commissioner James P. Redeker. “During that time, operating expenses continued to grow due to inflation and service has been increased on weekdays and weekends on both the New Haven Line and Shore Line East. We held several hearings throughout the state prior to adopting the phased implementation of fare increases over three years.”

Rail fares were set to increase by about four percent at the beginning of 2012, 2013 and 2014. As part of legislation enacted to have passengers help contribute toward the new M-8 rail cars entering into active service, rail fares were also increased an additional 1.00 percent on top of the four percent base fare increase.  This translates into a compounded average increase of 5.04 percent for January 1, 2014 across rail fare types, including weekly and monthly UniTickets (combined bus/rail tickets).
