Business Profile: Encore Books Music Videos & More

The Hippie Shop Without The Drug Stuff

Patch interviewed Encore's Donna Faulknor, owner of Clinton's second oldest downtown retail business (first in being groovy, however).

How long have you lived in Clinton: Since 1979

How long has Encore been in business: Since 1992

History of the business: It started in Westbrook in 1992 and then moved to my hometown in 1993 ... Added jewelry, clothes and more fun stuff in Clinton.

What do you offer: Clothes from India, new age books, rock and roll posters/t-shirts, vinyl records, memorabilia, one-of-a-kind items ... plus much more.

What makes Encore unique: It's a very personal store, everything is hand picked out by me ... a lot of fun things in a small 800 square foot space.

What is particularly "in" right now: Peace, Beatles, Grateful Dead, hippie clothes ... I try to pick out clothes for both adults that have seen the 60s firsthand and the kids who love the look.  Also we try to stress positive attitudes, free thinking, you know peace and love ... But NO DRUG STUFF ... the head shop without the drug stuff. It's a family place first.

What do you like best about town: It's down to earth and on the shore.

What do you like least about town: There's not enough support for local business.

Any personal thoughts you'd like to share: We need more retail traffic and involvement by the town. I invite the first selectmen and other town officials to make their first-ever visit to my store. I live in Clinton, have had my business here for 18-plus years (now the second oldest retail business in downtown Clinton), yet am continually surprised by the number of people who come in and say "I never knew you were here!" (Perhaps they drive through downtown with blinders on!). It would be nice if town officials would visit us downtown and see what the town could do to help promote area businesses.
