53 Unilever Employees Out Of Work On Labor Day Weekend

The plant slated to close the end of this year has begun its layoffs.

 

Patch has recently learned that 53 employees of the are out of work as of today, August 31, the Friday before the three-day Labor Day weekend.

At the end of October of this year, another 70 workers are slated to be let go.

The closing affects about 50 salaried and 135 hourly employees, plus an additional large temporary workforce of the multi-national manufacturer of consumer brand products such as Suave, Dove, Vaseline, Bertolli, Lipton, and Sunlight, to name a few.

The company has been working with its employees to help them find new jobs either within the company at another location or with a different employer.  Management has met regularly with the employees about the layoffs and have brought in services such as Workforce Alliance and the Labor Department to assist.

Unilever has operated out of the former headquarters of Pond's Cold Cream which was founded in the early 1900s.  Pond's merged with the Chesebrough Manufacturing Company which was then acquired by the Dutch company Unilever.
