The Mentalist, American Idol, Wipeout

by Elissa Bass

The Mentalist, 10 p.m., CBS

I quit this show back in December. Cold turkey. Even Simon Baker’s most delicious crinkly-eyed smile could not keep me sustained through lackluster plotting and obvious “twists.” Listen, if a dope like me can figure out who did it halfway through the episode, then you’ve got problems. Anyway, they have been promo-ing the heck out of tonight’s episode all week, and surprise! the unit chief has Jane at gunpoint. Really?

So, last night was 50 kids in Vegas with The Beatles and tonight – in two hours, no less – the judges will whittle it down to 24. The *top* 24. Mmm-hmmm. I lost two of my favorites in Hollywood, Rob of Rob and Chelsea, the Exes, and Emily Anne Reed. They exhaustively followed Rob’s painful journey, but inexplicably never showed us how Emily Anne crapped out. Fingers crossed there are lots of Kris Allens in this group, and not many Ace Youngs.

I’m in trouble now. I had specifically told my 10-year-old that “Wipeout never does family shows, because it is way too dangerous for kids plus moms can’t do that stuff because if the moms got hurt then who would take care of the families.” And now tonight is the family episode (hilariously entitled, “Kids Eat It For Free”).
