Shoreline residents are quite familiar with bays and howls of the small packs of coyotes that live and roam here throughout the region.
Usually we hear their calls in the evening or very early morning hours.
And so, imagine my surprise, when just a short time ago, I hear the pack of young coyotes now living in the wetlands scrub just off my deck here at the Foxon apartment complex where I live — start howling in tandem with an East Haven Fire Department engine's siren, as it races to a call.
I was surprised, but thought: "Oh, it's just a coincidence." Until it happened again 90 seconds later!
Thankfully, I was able to record the duet of fire siren and young coyotes that second time around.
