Newly Renovated HCH Children's Room Opens to Rave Reviews [Video]

When a group of three-year old kids gives the colors, design and space a big 'thumbs up,' you know you've done good.

The newly-renovated Children's Room at the Henry Carter Hull Library opened to rave reviews March 25 from their most discerning patrons: kids.

A group of youngsters squealed with delight at seeing the new furniture, rugs, artwork, circulation desk and computer station in the expansive space. A ribbon cutting ceremony was on tap with little Lucia Acampora, 2, performing the honors.

Children's Librarian Lynn Hidek said the changes have made the space more open and user-friendly.

"The location of the new circulation desk welcomes patrons and is more efficient for the staff than the old one," said Hidek.

There's a new project table for collaborative learning (sized just right for little ones), a computer research area, new chairs and new tables. There's also colorful artwork by local artist Claudia Uehlein.

Hidek said she and her staff reorganized the picture books in new bins that allow the books to face forward, making it easier for children to identify the one they want.

Library Director Maribeth Breen said funds for the renovation were generously given to the library by former Children's Librarian Lynnabeth Mays in her will.

"She asked for the funds to be specifically used in the Children's room," said Breen.

Architect Bruce Tuthill of Tuthill and Wells Architects, LLC of Avon designed the new space.
