Community Corner

Fundraiser for Local Hero

Family-friendly fundraiser on the afternoon and evening of Saturday, August 17, will be held at Firemen’s Field, 210 Elm St. in Old Saybrook, to support Sergeant David Tupper of the United States Marine Corps. Sgt. Tupper is a 2002 graduate of Old Saybrook High School, where he was a student-athlete and active member of the community. He is a husband and the proud father to three small children.

Sgt. Tupper served in tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, suffering a traumatic brain injuryas a result of combat-related incidents, and he’s now wheelchair-bound. The free event features a carnival-style atmosphere for children with a Moon Walk, games, face painting, raffle, and cotton candy from noon to 4 p.m. In addition, there will be bands and entertainment for the children, noon to 4 p.m., and for adults from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages will be served throughout the day. Donations to assist Sgt. Tupper will be accepted throughout the event.

A committee to assist Sgt. Tupper was established by his close friends David Perrotti, Scott Schoonmaker, Brian Ziolkovski, and David Tupper’s brother-in-law, David Chevrette. These four friends, along with family and community friends, are helping Sgt. Tupper transition from his military life to civilian life due to his service-related injury. The committee has been aided by several Old Saybrook and regional organizations, including the Old Saybrook Fire Department.

The committee is grateful to area businesses and the local community which have shown strong support for Sgt. Tupper and are helping to make the August 17 fundraiser possible at Firemen’s Field.

In addition to donations accepted throughout the fundraising event, direct donations also can be made to: Support Sgt. Tupper, 2 Butterwick Lane, Old Lyme, CT, 06371.
