P.J.Tautkus- A Hidden Treasure, A Musical Prodigy

If you happen to walk into an establishment featuring live music and hear the guitarist before you actually see him, you probably will be expecting to see a seasoned musician 40 plus years of age.  You wouldn't be more wrong.  P.J. is just 18 and a true musical progidy.

I first met P.J. and his mother, Paula on open mic night coming up on 5 years ago.  The first time he played there was one of the rare times I was not present for open mic.  My musician friends were calling me saying "You would not believe this kid-he's only 14" and "He plays like he's been playing a lifetime." I would soon find out it was true.

Fellow musicians embraced P.J. enthusiastically, eager to encourage and edify.  We all wanted to be supportive.   Everyone thought the same thing-that P.J. was going places.

A kid 14 years old can only go so far on his own.  He can have the natural abillity and put in the time practicing but without parental support he pretty much has to wait until legal age to make a name for himself.  Thankfully, P.J.'s family is very devoted to his success. His mother, Paula is P.J.'s manager and his dad, Ed is involved with the sound engineering.  Older brother, Eddie Jr. shows up at most gigs and is P.J.'s roadie.  Like a lot of young, gifted individuals a lot of time, effort and money by the artist himself and his parents go into the evolution of a musicians' journey to sucess.

P.J. started playing guitar at the age of 10 when he asked for a guitar for a birthday gift.   Through the next few years there was a progression of interest and frequency of practicing that at 12/13 years of age grew to a commitment of serious devotion of time.  His discipline to the craft meant exclusion to most things adolescent.  Starting with participation in open mic jam sessions a paradigm and defining moment came about after fellow musicians emphasized to him how good he was.  P.J. realized music was going to be his chosen career path.  Playing gigs with other musicians evolved to playing professionally on his own, 3 to 4 nights a week, another defining moment.

Although guitar is his instrument of choice P.J. also plays a little drums, keyboard and bass guitar.  Among his musical influences are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower and Rory Gallagher( 60's, 70's and 80's fame).  In an area where we are blessed to have many talented musicians P.J. is among the best.

P.J. has been accepted at Berklee School of Music where they only accept 28% of applicants.  He has worked hard at excelling in his skills.  Ultimately his desire is to be a performer and to have his name synonomous with great guitarists.  Real success means following your passions.  We who know P.J., who have watched him grow as an artist, have been present at his gigs, have believed in him and supported him, want to see his dream realized.
