Connecticut Leukemia Cup Regatta Raises a Sail and $100k for Blood Cancer Research

The Leukemia Cup Regatta is a thrilling series of sailing events that combines the joy of boating with the important goal of raising money to fight leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. The 2012 Connecticut Leukemia Cup Regatta was held this weekend, August 24 -25, in Westbrook and Old Saybrook, CT, in partnership with Duck Island Yacht Club, North Cove Yacht Club and Brewer Pilots Point Marina under blue skies and one of the finest sailing conditions of the season.  Over 60 boats participated, their skippers and crews helping raise over $100,000 for  the 2012 Regatta Series making the total raised in 12 years the Regatta has been held in Connecticut $915,000. The Regatta Series included One Design, PHRF and CR-914 model boat races, and fun Pre and Post-Race Parties and Auctions.  The success of the 2012 Regatta is due to the work of the entire Regatta Committee and it’s co-chairs, Roger Bauman of Westbrook and Anne Troy of Old Saybrook.

The Screwball’s skipper and crew raised over $11,000 with the help from the skipper and Clinton, CT resident Kevin Carse’s 12 year old daughter who raised over $3,200 selling home made fudge.  For raising over $8,500 a participant is eligible to go to “Fantasy Sail” with Gary Jobson, world-renowned sailor, ESPN commentator and National Leukemia Cup Regatta Chairman in New Orleans December 7-9, 2012.    Other participants are still fundraising to be eligible for Fantasy Sail if they raise enough to qualify by November 1st.

All proceeds from the Leukemia Cup Regatta goes to research and patient services.

“The need for cures is critical,” said Jeannie Montano, Executive Director of the Connecticut Chapter. “One person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer approximately every four minutes, so fundraising events such as our Leukemia Cup Series are crucial in supporting research to find cures”.
