Literacy Volunteers, Valley Shore, 61 Goodspeed Dr, Westbrook, CT, 06498

Literacy Volunteers Valley Shore is accepting application for our Spring 2024 New ESL Tutor Training Workshop. No experience needed for this enriching experience – only a desire to have fun, learn another culture and help someone in our community! Through our 14-hour program conducted over eight sessions, individuals learn how to teach English to adult residents from around the world who want to learn or improve their English language skills. Potential tutors choose either the AM sessions from 9:30-11-00AM or the evening sessions from 7-8:30PM. The morning session are held in person at our office in the Westbrook Library and the evening session are a hybrid of in person and virtual via Zoom. The next training session begins April 18th and runs through May 23rd. We also have an online self-facilitated training option available for those unable to attend these workshops but would still like to be trained as an LVVS tutor. We ask for a $35 donation for the training materials provided. Meet at Meigs Point Nature Center at Hammonasset Beach State Park.&nbsp;&nbsp;All volunteers are welcome! Come as an individual or with your family. Also a great club or group activity – school clubs, scout troops, community groups, business volunteers groups, etc.
Keeping the beach clean and free of debris not only improves the appearance for everyone’s enjoyment, but it vitally important for the health of birds and aquatic animals.
All cleanup supplies will be provided. We have individually wrapped snacks. Volunteers should bring their own beverages.

Old Saybrook Fire Department

&nbsp;- For the 12th year, Connecticut shoreline fire departments will partner with The Shoreline Soup Kitchens&nbsp; &amp; Pantries (SSKP) to host a one-day food drive on Saturday, April 20th, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to collect non-perishable food for shoreline residents in need at participating fire stations as well as several grocery stores and businesses along the shoreline. 
This year SSKP is especially grateful for such a community-wide effort because the number of individuals visiting their food pantries this year is still much higher than in pre-pandemic times. Last&nbsp; year SSKP distributed almost 2 million pounds of food – more than ever before in their 35-year history. Every item of food donated will make a real difference to local families struggling with food insecurity.

Many local shoreline fire departments will be collecting non-perishable food for SSKP during the April 20th food drive, which is one of the organization's largest food drives of the year. Shoreline fire departments already committed to participate include Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Clinton, Killingworth, North Madison and Chester. Watch for announcements as other fire departments join in this special food drive. 
Fire department teams will be collecting donations at their firehouses as well as local grocery stores including Stop &amp; Shop in Old Saybrook and Clinton; Big Y in Old Saybrook and Clinton; ShopRite in Clinton; and&nbsp; Walmart in Old Saybrook, DG Markets in Essex and Roberts Food Center, Madison, 
In addition, non-perishable food donations can be brought to Mirsina’s Restaurant in Old Saybrook; the Parthenon Diner in Old Saybrook; Sal's Pizza &amp; Pasta in Old Saybrook; and Scotch Plains Tavern in Essex as well as the Essex Savings Bank in Old Saybrook. 
Please note that all these additional locations are accepting non-perishable food donations during their regular business hours through Saturday, April 20th.&nbsp;
This year's food drive will help to restock the pantries and ensure that everyone in our local communities will have a place at the table. Please join the effort by donating food or by holding a food drive in your neighborhood, workplace, or club, and then bringing the food donations to one of the participating shoreline firehouses. Please be aware that these participating fire departments can only accept food during the food drive occurring on Saturday, April 20th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please do not drop off food items at these firehouses before that date. The&nbsp;most urgently needed food items are peanut butter, tuna fish, and pasta. In addition, these items are also needed: canned soup; canned fruit/applesauce; boxed meals, such as mac and cheese; Chef Boyardee type items; cereal/oatmeal; pasta sauce; white rice; beans; canned tomatoes and vegetables; beverages such as coffee and tea as well as health and beauty items like soap, dental items, or cleaning products. 
This year's food drive is pleased to announce that local TV and radio personalities will participate, including Gil Simmons, Chief Meteorologist for NEWS 8 WTNH, and talk-show host Lee Elci, the morning personality on his popular Lee Elci Show on 94.9 FM News Now-Stimulating Talk. Both Simmons and Elci will be joining firefighters and volunteers on Saturday morning, April 20th, collecting food items at OSFD Headquarters at 310 Main Street in Old Saybrook. The Shoreline Soup Kitchens &amp; Pantries and participating shoreline fire departments also want to extend their special thanks to this year’s Food Drive Media Sponsors including Shore Publishing/Harbor News; 94.9 FM News Now-Stimulating Talk; Soft Rock WBMW 106.5; and Jammin' 107.7 FM, which will host a live broadcast from the OSFD Headquarters during the April 20th food drive.
