Special Town Meeting Items Approved

Including $1.45 Million for Storm Irene Cleanup. Attendance included a larger group at 58 electors

A Special Town Meeting was held January 25 in Clinton with a four-part agenda to approve (or deny) appropriations for the police contract, storm Irene costs, pension plan money for the Department of Public Works employees, and pension plan funds for other town workers.

All items passed either unanimously, or in the Storm Irene agenda item, with two dissents from the public.

The only person from the public to speak prior to the vote was Phil Sengle who spoke in favor of the work of the Clinton Police Department.

"The Clinton Police Department is perhaps unappreciated," he said. "When they get press, it is good press."

Sengle pointed out the recent unfavorable press about the East Haven Police Department and in the past, that of the Madison Police Department.

Here are the final numbers:

Police Contract Settlement - total of $333,173

Police salaries regular $204,937

Police salaries overtime $94,633

Police salaries holiday $9,927

Police fringe benefits, social security $23,676

Tropical Storm Irene - total of $1,452,000

Communications salaries overtime $2,000

Police salaries overtime $11,000

(Part of these costs shall be reimbursed by FEMA)

Fringe Benefits Pension Plan - Highway - total of $28,000

Fringe Benefits Pension Plan - Other Government - total of $67,000

Money for these appropriations was taken from the town's reserves (fund balance).
