Local Teen Charged with Drunk Driving After Crash

18-year-old Cody Aitken, a senior at Coginchaug High School in Durham, was arrested for DUI after another teen was hurt in May 25 crash.

 

A local high school student was drunk when he caused a two-car crash in Durham last month, according to police.

Cody Aitken, 18, of Wagon Wheel Road in Durham, was charged with driving under the influence following the crash at the intersection of Route 17 and Higganum Road on May 25.

According to police, Aitken was driving a GMC Envoy when he slammed into another SUV with three people inside, shortly after 10 p.m. Both vehicles were totaled in the crash, according to Sgt. Sal Calvo.

A passenger in the second vehicle, a 14-year-old girl from Killingworth, was transported by Durham Ambulance to Middlesex Hospital with an arm injury. No other injuries were reported.

Aitken, a student at Coginchaug High School, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a report says.

The accident happened on the eve of the school's prom and a day after  designed to send a strong anti-drunk driving message.

In addition to the DUI charge, Aitken is charged with failing to grant the right of way at an intersection and littering.
